Mooney transition training with a Mooney-specific instructor

Mooney transition training gets you safe and confident in your Mooney, flying your own airplane at your own airport with an instructor who specializes in Mooneys. Transition training typically takes 10–15 flight hours plus 8–10 hours of ground, and experienced pilots may need less.

A Mooney rewards precision and punishes sloppiness. It’s slick, it’s fast, and it doesn’t want to come down if you show up at the threshold 10 knots hot. Good transition training is about building the habits that keep you out of trouble, not just checking a box.

Who it’s for

  • New Mooney owners, from the short-body M20C/E/F to the J, K, Ovation, Bravo, Acclaim, and the M20U and M20V Ultras
  • Pilots stepping up from fixed-gear or slower complex airplanes
  • Owners whose insurer requires a set number of dual hours (see insurance checkout training)

What we cover

Every program is customized. Our revised syllabus (October 2026) plans 11.5 hours of flight training and 8.0 hours of ground training, and your instructor adjusts the time to your progress. Here’s how it typically breaks down:

Ground

  • Your airplane’s systems: gear (manual or electric), fuel, electrical, engine management, and avionics such as the G1000/GFC 700 where installed
  • Weight and balance, performance, and your POH limitations
  • Risk management and single-pilot resource management: personal minimums, go/no-go, and the Mooney-specific risks (fast approaches, gear-up landings)
  • Airport and cross-country planning in your airplane

Flight

  • Handling, pattern work, and landings, with airspeed discipline on final
  • Slow flight, stalls, steep turns, and go-arounds
  • Emergency procedures, including emergency gear extension and simulated engine failure
  • A real cross-country with a diversion, plus night or instrument work if it applies
  • A final scenario flight that ties it all together

Completing the program is set up to earn credit toward the FAA WINGS program (Basic, Advanced, and Master phases), and a completed WINGS phase also satisfies your flight review. See Recurrent, flight reviews, and IPCs.

Flying an Ultra (M20U or M20V)?

Mooney Pros began in 2017 as the factory transition program Mooney International set up for its Ultra models, so we know the Ovation Ultra (M20U) and Acclaim Ultra (M20V) well. That factory program ended when Mooney stopped producing airplanes. Today Ultra owners train with us through our regular transition training and recurrent training. For an Ultra, that covers:

  • A full systems and POH review of the M20U or M20V
  • G1000 NXi and GFC 700 automation management: mode awareness, approaches, and failure handling
  • Engine management, normally aspirated or turbocharged
  • Scenario-based decision-making and risk management

Ultra owners (and most other Mooney models) can also use our free weight and balance and performance calculator. How Mooney Pros started →

We come to you. If you’re buying, your instructor can meet you at the prebuy location and train you on the flight home. See ferry and repositioning.

Who you’ll fly with

We’ll match you with an instructor who knows your model, your avionics, and your part of the country. Meet the instructors →

Cost

$800 per training day, $500 per half day, and $800 per instructor travel day (or $500 for a half travel day), plus the instructor’s direct expenses. See exactly how billing works →
